Double Spinner!

What does the resource do?

Following a request via email, this resource features two spinners which teachers can customise and use with an IWB.

How does it work?

On the opening screen, type the labels you would like to appear on each of the two spinners.

When you press the ‘Spin’ button, both spinners will randomly select a segment.

How can I use it?

This resource was created in response to a request via email – here is how the teacher thought the requested resource could be used:

“I would like to see TWO spinners on the same page. I can see it used kind of like the Role Selector except it will spin BOTH at the same time, so the person and the role are random – OR – a PE teacher could have numbers on one spinner and activities on the other. So, random exercises are assigned – like if one spinner came up 10 and the other came up jumping jacks, the class would do 10 jumping jacks!”

As ever, all feedback will be appreciated.

Also, please add your comments to this post if you think of an imaginative way to use the ‘Double Spinner’. Your comments will hopefully provide ideas and inspiration for other teachers.

How about having one spinner with adjectives and the other with nouns? The the spin would make a ‘random’ pick as to what to include in a writing assignment.

I also had the idea to make one spinner with adjectives and one with nouns, but my thought was to have students make up a sentence with the adjective describing the noun that was selected. The sentence might turn out to be a silly sentence, but it could be fun and increase awareness of EXACTLY what an adjective is. This could also be done with adverbs and verbs, prepositions and phrases, etc.

I’m also wondering if there is a way to save the spinners we create.

Hello Tricia – thank you for posting…

At the moment, it is not possible to save the spinners you create but this is something I could perhaps add to future versions of this resource.

Thanks, David.

[...] you can easily adapt. I use the 8 spinner and write in student’s names. They now even have a double spinner where you can put in two different categories. Great for creating sentences or domino story [...]

As a precalc teacher, I’d love this to practice some trig values. For instance, have the six trig functions on one spinner and angles on the other. Very cool!

thanks for all that you share! I’ve enjoyed playing with the interactives and my students have benefit as well. I was wondering with the two spinners if it is possible to lengthen the words selected as labels. I was trying to type my labels and words were cut off (education, technology- were some of the labels i was trying to use).
Any thoughts/
thanks so much!

I will see if I can adapt the spinner and update the resource.

I wlll use in my FL class – say, side a verb & the other the tense ( past/future) etc. – Look like fun!

That sounds good Ramito – let me know how it goes! It sounds like a good idea that other teachers may be able to use in their own classrooms too.

Thanks for your comments,

I use this as a review game with my high school kids. I put points on one spinner and categories on the other spinner. I split the class up and students take turns coming up. When they spin, they get a question from the category worth however many points for their team. The kids absolutely LOVE the game. They want to play whenever we have a spare moment.

That’s great news Jill – I’m really pleased…

Perhaps other teachers will be similarly inspired to use this resource in the way you describe – it sounds like a very good idea… I hadn’t thought of using the resource to manage a quiz in this way.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback – it is much appreciated,

David

Just found the spinner. I would like to be able to use it as a question spinner but have found a few minor issues:
Question spinners only need 6 labels
One label needs to be able to take enough characters to put in Where / When

Am going to try it with my students anyway.

Also like Jills idea for a grammar review. Thanks for a great tool

Thank you for your comments Amanda…

I will try to make some time to update the spinners. In the meantime, you could use the question dice with your class: Link to Question Dice Resource.

However, the dice can be a little volatile… so the spinner may be a safer option!

I like Jill’s idea too and will try to make time to create a resource that would be tailored more specifically this type of activity.

The spinner is perfect for conjugation in my 8th grade Spanish class. I put subjects on one and the verbs we are working with on the other. I would love to be able to save each version as I customize it. Gracias!

Thank you for your comment Gloria – that is great news and I am really pleased that you are finding the resource to be useful.

I would like to spend some time updating all of the resources on the site… so, if I do, I will remember your comments about being able to save the different versions you create.

Thanks again, David.
